A Nice Place to Visit, But . . .

“[God] will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death” or mourning or crying or pain.

Revelation 21:4

Nothing is ever good enough for some people. They read about heaven’s streets of gold and pearly gates (Revelation 21–22) and respond, “Wouldn’t that get boring?” They yawn when they imagine sitting around on a cloud, eternally strumming a harp.

Maybe they are jaded because they have seen people who tried to establish “heaven on earth” environments before, each attempt an epic fail. The book of Ecclesiastes tells of a wealthy and powerful figure (perhaps Solomon) who threw himself into work projects, sumptuous living, the pursuit of wisdom, and more, only to conclude that “everything is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 1:2). We often hear the same from seemingly successful people who appear to “have it all” yet are never happy. Is that what’s in store for all of us in heaven?

If we come to that conclusion, we’re missing the point. The attraction of heaven is not the gold or the pearls; it’s the glory of God. Most of us have had rare and treasured occasions when we were with someone in a perfect moment that we desperately hoped would never end, but it did. And it always does. Yet if we could take away death, pain, time, and sin, and then envision such a moment, what might it be like to share that level of intimacy with everyone, in the presence of God, forever?

When God finally shows us life as he always intended it to be, no one will be yawning. That’s impossible to do when your jaw has hit the ground.
